Improving Comfort While Riding Your Motorcycle
No one can deny that motorcycle riding is an absolute blast. Motorcycle enthusiasts often try to ride as long as they can before stopping, but one problem that may hold them back or force them to take a few days off to recover is pain. No matter how fit you are, your motorcycle may still end up causing you some acute and chronic pain while riding, pain that lingers long after you’ve shut off the engine and left your bike in the garage.
BMW Motorcycles of Burbank is your SoCal motorcycle dealer. We want to help you reduce that pain you experience while riding so that every ride is enjoyable again. Here are some simple tips to help you improve your comfort while riding your bike.
1. Invest in and Use Cruise Control
If your bike already has cruise control, then great. If not, you should look into having an accessory installed on your bike that will allow you to implement it. Cruise control is an extremely helpful feature that was initially installed in cars to allow the driver to relax their foot while the car maintains a constant speed. Motorcycles have started to feature it, especially touring bikes that are specifically designed to be ridden over long distances. A bike that has cruise control is going to be a bike that’s more comfortable to ride.
2. Install a Windshield
Another frequent cause of concern for motorcyclists is wind fatigue. Wind fatigue is simply tiredness that occurs when your body’s muscles ache after holding you upright against the oncoming wind. Protect yourself from wind, bug splatters and rain by installing a windshield on your bike. You can choose between permanent and removable models, depending on what you want.
3. Invest in Cushioned Seating
Your motorcycle’s seat is probably padded, but it’s not necessarily going to be the highest quality padding available and it may be somewhat deflated after years of use. You can invest in an inflatable cushion that helps to equalize forces over weight-bearing areas, similar to cushions employed by wheelchair users. You can also invest in polymer cushions that are similar to those used in hospitals. Finding a more comfortable seating solution can help to reduce lower back and leg pain.
4. Take More Frequent Breaks
Sure, it’s great to ride for as long as you can, but it will take a toll on your body at some point. Try to interject more frequent breaks into your rides. You don’t need an excuse; if you want to stop, then stop. Have a snack, drink some water, walk around and remove your helmet for a bit. Who knows — that random exit you just pulled into may have a fascinating tourist attraction or scenic view worthy of an Instagram post.
5. Stretch Before You Ride
Everyone knows that stretching before a workout is a good idea for limbering up your muscles. But have you considered how your motorcycle rides are similar to workouts in their intensity and the muscles they engage? Try to perform some simple stretches for five to ten minutes before you hop on your bike. Yoga warm-ups or even some jumping jacks will help to limber up your joints and muscles so that you aren’t as likely to experience tightness or soreness when you’re done with your ride.
